FAQ on Sandy Bridge Issue
Dear Valued Acer Customer,

On January 31st, Intel disclosed that they had discovered a design issue in one of the components of the Sandy Bridge product line, the newest generation of processors and associated chipset recently released to production and adopted by all major PC manufacturers, including Acer.

Below you can find a brief description of the issue: additional information can be found on the Intel web site at the following URL: http://www.intel.com/consumer/products/processors/chipset.htm?iid=en_US_01_chipset+gg_headline According to Intel, the Serial-ATA (SATA) ports within the chipsets may degrade over time, potentially impacting the performance or functionality of SATA-linked devices such as hard disk drives and DVD-drives.

In most designs, SATA ports are used to connect the Hard Disk Drive (including Solid State Disks), the Optical Disk Drive (Blue Ray, DVD, CDROM etc.) and other peripherals. It is common practice to connect the primary HDD to SATA port 0, while ODD port varies from design to design. The design issue identified by Intel may cause degradation over time in the connectivity of the affected ports (SATA ports 2 to 5). In short, after a period of time (which varies with the peripheral’s usage pattern) the amount of data transferred may decrease. At some point the peripheral may no longer be recognized by the system and may consequently stop working.

Since the effect of this issue will materialize over a rather long period of time, Intel has advised that users of affected PCs will not necessarily see an immediate effect and they can keep using their PCs with confidence while permanent solution options are made available.

Customers should also keep in mind that there are no safety concerns related to this issue.

If you bought an Acer Desktop or Notebook after January 9th, 2011, your unit might be already using the Sandy Bridge chipset and therefore affected by the issue described above.

In case your Desktop or Notebook is affected, you will be given the following options:

Get you unit serviced by Acer, once fixed chipsets are available from Intel
Swap the product with another Acer product
Consult with the retailer which originally sold the unit to determine the applicable return policy for customers who wish to immediately select this option.
How to find the 'SNID' or 'Serial Number' of your Acer System?
For Notebooks, the SNID / Serial Number is located on the bottom of the unit.
The SNID is 11 numeric characters.
The Serial Number is 22 alphanumerics characters.
